Virtual TimeClock includes program logs that provide system level information about your time clock. Program logs can be used for tracking timecard modifications, administrator login, manual entries, database backups, time clock errors and much more. This article will outline the four types of program logs, how to access the logs and what you can do with them.
Types of Program Logs
Below are the four types of logs recorded in Virtual TimeClock and including what information they provide.
Audit logs record modifications to timecards, manual timecard entries, when administration mode is enabled, electronic timecard approval, when payroll periods are closed, and more.
Backup logs record the success or failure of both manual and scheduled backups, as well as the date and time of your next scheduled backup. For more information, review the Verifying Scheduled Backups article.
Error logs record all errors that are received by users and administrators, including sudden program terminations and other unexpected events. Error logs can be used to help diagnose issues with your software and potential problems with your computer hardware.
Information logs record general information related to program launch, software updates, operating system details, database information and network connections.
How to Access Program Logs
Program logs are saved and displayed on the computer where the log event occurred. For example, if you have the Network Edition and you want to check on changes a manager made, you must access the program logs on the manager’s computer. Follow the steps below to access program logs for your version:
- MacOS users: Macintosh HD > Library > Application Support > Redcort > VTC > Basic Logs
- Windows users: Local Disk (C:) > ProgramData > Redcort > VTC > Basic Logs
Note: ProgramData is a hidden folder on Windows. Select File Explorer Options from the Control Panel. Under the View tab, turn on "Show hidden files and folders"
- Select Turn Administration On from the File menu.
- Select Program Logs from the Configure menu.
- Open the Virtual TimeClock Server Manager program.
- Select the Logs tab from the toolbar.
Note: Network Edition users can also access individual Pro Client and User Client logs. To access Pro Client logs, follow the steps for the Pro Edition above and locate the Pro Client logs folder. To access User Client logs, follow the steps for the Basic Edition above and locate the User Client logs folder.
Exporting and Printing Program Logs
Program logs can be exported and opened in a text editor program for further analysis or printed for your records.
- To export logs, click Export at the bottom of the program logs window. When logs are exported they will be saved to your desktop in a "Logs" folder.
Tip: Use the Find feature of your text editor to search for keywords, dates, etc.
- To print logs, open a log folder, choose a specific log file and click Print from the bottom of the window.
The program logs are a powerful feature for increasing time clock accountability, investigating errors, viewing general system information and much more.
