My TimeClock Windows are Opening as a New Tab (macOS)

May 17, 2022

Are tabs opening in the main Virtual TimeClock window instead of separately in their own windows? A setting labeled "Prefer tabs" in System Preferences on macOS will cause your reports and other features to open as a new tab within the main Virtual TimeClock window instead of as a separate window. Virtual TimeClock was not designed for tabs and this will cause unexpected behavior, especially when you run reports.

This behavior is caused when your Mac's "Prefer Tabs" setting is set to "Always."  Change this setting to "in full screen" or "In Full Screen Only" and your TimeClock software will start opening a new window instead of a tab within the window. Below are detailed guides to adjust this setting, depending on which version of macOS you are running.

In macOS 10.15 Catalina and earlier, the setting "Prefer tabs when opening documents" is found in System Preferences > Dock.

In macOS 11 Big Sur and later, the setting was moved to System Preferences > General and re-labeled "Prefer tabs:".
