When is Juneteenth 2024?
Juneteenth, became a federally recognized holiday on June 17th, 2021. While not formally a federal holiday until then, many states and communities across the US have long acknowledged its significance. This year, Juneteenth will be observed on Wednesday, June 19th.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform enslaved African-Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended. The holiday is also sometimes called "Juneteenth Independence Day," "Freedom Day," or "Emancipation Day."
