What Is Windows RT?

August 11, 2014

Windows RT is an edition of the Windows 8 operating system designed for mobile devices to improve power efficiency and allow for longer battery life. Windows RT looks and functions a lot like Windows 8. For example, it still provides the traditional Windows desktop environment and touch-oriented user interface. But it contains a number of differences. The biggest one being that Windows RT is only compatible with software downloaded from the Windows Store. That means the only desktop applications officially supported by Windows RT are those that come with the operating system itself, such as File Explorer, Internet Explorer, and Office RT. Only Windows Runtime apps obtained from the Windows Store can be installed on Windows RT devices.
