This year Columbus Day will be observed on Monday October 11th and is the only federal holiday in October. Most banks and federal offices will be closed as well as schools in states that recognize this holiday. Many private sector businesses will also be closed.
Columbus Day commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. It became a national holiday by proclamation in 1937 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
