Origins of Memorial Day

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. It was established in May 1868, just three years after the end of the Civil War. It began as a tradition of decorating the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and has since become a day of national remembrance.¹

Observed on the last Monday in May, Memorial Day honors the U.S. military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom.
