When is Juneteenth 2026?

May 27, 2026

Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in June of 2021. Even before this federal recognition, many states and communities across the country had long celebrated its significance.

Juneteenth will be observed on Friday, June 19, 2026.

Juneteenth recognizes June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to tell the enslaved African-American population that they were free and that the Civil War had ended. It is also called "Freedom Day," "Juneteenth Independence Day," or "Emancipation Day."

Federal government offices and most banks will be closed on June 19, though some private businesses may stay open. For more details on federal holidays in 2026, visit our Federal Holiday Calendar page.
