Origins of Memorial Day

Memorial Day was first known as Decoration Day and began in May 1868, only a few years after the Civil War ended. People originally used the day to "...decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers."¹

The last Monday in May is dedicated to honoring U.S. military personnel who fought and died to protect and preserve our freedom.
