What Day is Juneteenth 2025

May 29, 2025

Juneteenth, officially recognized as a federal holiday on June 17, 2021, commemorates a significant date in American history. Prior to federal designation, its importance had long been acknowledged by numerous states and communities across the United States.

This year, Juneteenth will be observed on Thursday, June 19th.

The holiday of Juneteenth marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865, the day Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform the enslaved African-American population of their freedom and the cessation of the Civil War. This commemoration is also referred to as "Juneteenth Independence Day," "Freedom Day," or "Emancipation Day."

Federal government offices and most banking institutions will be closed on June 19th, while many private sector businesses may choose to remain open. Refer to our Federal Holiday Calendar resource page for more information regarding federal holidays in 2025.
