Holidays in January 2022

December 30, 2021

January is nearly here, with its New Year's resolutions, the start of the spring semester, and a chance to rest from the flurry of the previous month's holiday activities. There are two federal holidays found in January:

  • Saturday, January 1st - New Year's Day (observed December 31st, 2021)
  • Monday, January 17th - Martin Luther King Jr. Day

When a legal public holiday falls on a Saturday, it is usually observed on the preceding Friday for pay and leave purposes. Because New Year's Day (January 1st) falls on a Saturday, many businesses will observe New Year's Day on Friday, December 31st, 2021.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day always falls on the 3rd Monday in January. This year that day is January 17th, 2022.

Federal vs Business Holidays
New Years Day is both a federal and business holiday. Expect many businesses as well as banks and schools to be closed to observe the New Year.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not recognized as a business holiday. This means that most banks and schools will be closed, but your local grocery store or mechanic shop likely has regular hours.
