When is Memorial Day 2020?

April 20, 2020

Memorial Day, the only holiday in the month of May, falls on Monday, May 25th this year. Memorial Day always falls on the last Monday in May and is recognized as both a federal and a business holiday. This means most banks, schools, state and federal offices and many private sector businesses will celebrate by taking the day off from work and enjoying time with family and friends.

History of Memorial Day
The observance of Memorial Day dates back to just after the American Civil War when Decoration Day was introduced by veterans as a way to honor fallen Union and Confederate soldiers. Since the institution of Decoration Day on May 5, 1868, this important day of commemoration has grown to honor and remember fallen soldiers from any war where American troops fought and died.

Over 50 years ago, in the year 1967, congress officially established Memorial Day as a federal holiday that would take the place of Decoration Day every year on the last Monday in May.

There are many traditions associated with Memorial Day. American flags are placed on the graves of fallen soldiers, we attend patriotic parades, and enjoy outdoor picnics to celebrate our freedom and honor those who gave their life in service to our country. Many Americans have a special connection to this holiday through the loss of a loved one in time of war. All of us are touched by the sacrifice of men and women who paid the ultimate price to secure and preserve our freedom.
